The Solution. In most cases the solution is to rehydrate the children by giving them an oral rehydrating fluid with a home based solution (previously known as Darrow’s fluid) – a mixture of sugar and salt in boiled water. Its use has been promoted by clinics for many years.
Why the Spoon of Hope? SIMPLICITY The current instructions issued by clinics are 8 teaspoons of sugar plus ½ teaspoon of salt in 1 litre of boiled water. This method is confusing and difficult to prepare and requires a certain level of literacy and numeracy skills. A sample of the current instructions is shown in the right image above.
